Saturday. Cala Gració, Ibiza.

Jennifer pressed her back against the cool door. She didn’t actually need to use the restroom, but it provided her a much needed opportunity to catch her breath.

She’d never liked dancing. It always made her feel awkward and aware of herself in a way she’d rather not be. But swaying in Orion’s harms hadn’t been all that bad.

The flush she’d thought had gone away came back. Her eyes watered from the heat in her face.

She pressed her hands to her cheeks and squeezed her eyes shut, but all that did was provide her a mental picture of Orion’s face so dangerously close to her own.

Her insides seemed to melt.

What was happening to her?

She’d manage to hold on to her suspicion of the man for years.

Jennifer was falling for him. Maybe she already had?

Shit.

All too soon a day here and there wouldn’t be enough. What about when he was busy and couldn’t come see her?

She pulled out her leather gloves and shoved her hands into them. That done, she freed the catch on her gun. She didn’t want to use it, but she had to consider all options with a job like them.

This Orion issue was a shitty situation. She didn’t see how this would work unless one of them gave up their career.

It would be her. It made more sense.

And yet, she didn’t want to quit working to just be Orion’s girlfriend. That wouldn’t work for her.

The lights winked out.

A second later, a girl screamed from somewhere else in the house.

Jennifer flinched. Her initial reaction was to rush toward the sound. But she couldn’t.

There was no way to know how long it would take someone to flip the breakers. She could have a few seconds to several minutes.

She threw the door to the bathroom open.

The hall was empty.

Perfect.

She darted up the stairs. As far as she could tell, most people had remained on the first floor.

A pair of glass double doors barred the second floor. Those hadn’t been on the spec sheet she’d received. Something new? Or a planned omission?

She pushed, and they opened. She spared a glance for the electric locking mechanism. Would she be able to get out that way?

Maybe not.

Where to?

The blueprint came to the forefront of her mind. She’d studied it from every angle.

Without hesitating, she turned left.

The main space here was a private art gallery and a few sofas. A pair of wooden double doors let her into the spacious study. Books and cases to display other items lined the walls. A desk faced the windows and a small balcony.

Where was it?

The schematic had only said it was in here, but not where.

She strode through the study, peering into each darkened box.

There.

Set into the far wall was a case with deep, navy blue velvet. And sitting on the cushion was the simple wooden box.

Jennifer felt along the box until she found the digital display. The wood was merely for show.

With the electricity cut, she was able to easily open the sealed display box.
