Monday : Do the Hanger Test

10 minutes

If you’re a clotheshorse, you may have trouble recognizing which clothes you wear and which you don’t. To find out, try this trick: Turn all of the hangers in your closet around so that the point of the hook faces you instead of the back of the closet. When you wear and launder something, hang the hanger up as usual with the hook facing away from you. At the end of the season, survey the hanger situation. What do you see? If there are a lot of hangers tips still facing you, think seriously about donating anything you haven’t worn. You may be surprised by how much unworn clothing you’re storing in that closet!

Tuesday : Lint-Roll Your Lampshades

10 minutes

You may have noticed that lampshades get dustier more quickly than almost any other surface in the house. They’re like dust magnets, and traditional dusting tools don’t seem to do a thing. Don’t even bother with dusters; go find your lint roller or lint brush. If you don’t have one, go to any home goods store and pick one up. There are two common styles: one with disposable adhesive sheets and another that you clean by hand and use over and over. Either is fine. Once you’ve got it, roll your lamp-shade the way you would a garment to remove dust, lint, and pet hair. It works like a charm!

But now that it’s a blank slate, you need to decide what the best use is for this surface. Will it be a vanity of sorts, with a mirror, jewelry box, and makeup kit? Or will you use this space to store items like lotion and perfume? If your dresser is next to your bed, it might function like a nightstand — a spot for reading materials, reading glasses, and other related items. Whatever purpose you choose for the top of your dresser, always keep it neat and dusted. Once you start using it as a dumping ground, you’ll find yourself back in Clutterville.

Thursday : Create a Cozy Nook

20 minutes

You probably had the best of intentions when you put that comfy chair in the corner of your bedroom, but what was meant to be a relaxing space has turned into a mound of madness. Don’t fret; some good old-fashioned organization can fix this. Begin by removing anything that doesn’t have to do with relaxing — put away clothes, shoes, bags, and so on. Then place a side table with drawers and shelves next to your chair to help keep piles of books or balls of yarn or whatever it is that you’re into off the floor. Make sure you have less things on your shelves or in your drawers than could actually fit there. This isn’t so you’ll have
