“Well, I’m glad the rain didn’t ruin your day,” I told my sister. “It sounds like you and Jake thoroughly enjoyed your much-needed time alone together.”

Liv and I were out for a day of sisterly bonding while Jake and Brooks were doing their own thing. We’d just had hour-long massages and gotten manicures and pedicures before coming out for lunch.

She had just spent the last twenty minutes telling me about her day with her husband yesterday while we waited for our meals to arrive.

“We did,” Liv confirmed. “But I have to admit I’ve been dying to hear all about your time with Brooks yesterday. I know how much you despise the rain, and I’m betting he didn’t leave you sitting inside by yourself all day.”

I returned a look that I knew told her I’d had a fantastic day with Brooks. Without me even needing to say anything, she surmised, “Something happened between the two of you. Something good.”

After shooting her a guilty-as-charged look, I told her, “It was so good.”

“You slept with him?” she asked.

Nodding, I answered, “Yes. And I don’t regret it at all.”

“Well, I’m happy to hear that he got his head out of his ass,” she started. “What was his deal the day before?”

“Jake,” I shared.

“Jake?” she repeated, her confusion evident.

Shaking my head, I explained, “Apparently, that night you got back from the airport with Jake and he and Brooks stayed in the living room while we were in the kitchen, Jake stressed that Brooks shouldn’t get involved with me. I guess he was concerned about the distance and me getting hurt when Brooks goes back to Miami.”

“I love my husband,” Liv began. “But he shouldn’t have done that.”

“No, he shouldn’t have. But I understand why he did it, and I can’t fault him for looking out for me.”

“So, how did he come around?” she asked.

Thoughts of my entire day with Brooks yesterday ran through my mind. I smiled just thinking about all of it. Then, since I was bursting at the seams wanting to share some good news with my sister, I leaned forward and gave it to her. Not every single detail, of course. But I gave her plenty to satisfy her curiosity.

When I finished sharing, she leaned back in her chair and declared, “I knew it. Didn’t I tell you how much he liked you?”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself,” I advised. “We like each other enough to have a good time, but this isn’t going to be some long-lasting thing between us. We’re just enjoying each other for the next few days. That’s all.”

In a rare occurrence, my sister showed her feelings on her face. Her features fell with disappointment.

“What is that look for?” I asked.

I could hear the despondency in her tone when she said, “It’s just that I’ve been really excited about the possibility of you and Brooks together ever since I saw him look at you that first night. Even when he was being slightly standoffish the next day, I still thought you two would be great together.
