October Heartbreak

October 11, 1943

Dear Barbara,

I thank God that I am, in a way, qualified to serve my fellow men as a warrior. I alone am only a tiny speck in the mass of humanity, but the principles I believe in are greater even than humanity itself.

Do I get scared? Certainly. I’ve had many times a feeling of emptiness in my stomach. But I meditate, remembering men who served their fellows, soldiers, poets, doctors, the greatest and the least. Then, the emptiness vanishes and I am alert, alive, filled with a spirit that my task shall be completed. I ask not for wealth, or fame, or long life, only that I many have strength and courage to get to my objective and hit it, and hit it and hit it.

The enemy wants to take our life, our liberty, our happiness. If these things are not precious enough that we give our lives for them, we do not deserve them.
