“What is wrong with that stupid dog?” King rose and stumped through the kitchen to the back door. “Shut it up, Dingo!” He roared through the screen.
The dog ignored him and continued barking and snarling at whatever was upsetting him.
“Dammit!” King swung open the door and stormed out into the yard. Carlita cringed at the thought of what he might do to the dog once he got his hands around his neck; her breathing slowed as she listened to him screaming in the back of the house. Dingo welped in pain; King had caught him and it wasn’t to rub his head and give him a treat.
“I said, shut it up!”
Dingo welped again.
The door swung open and hit the wall as King returned. Dingo began barking again.
“What’s wrong with him?”
“I don’t know! He kept digging in your garden and I kicked his ass! I told you we shoulda got rid of him a long time ago!”
The room was spinning; Carlita tried to grab the counter to balance herself but she put her weight on the open drawer, sending the hundreds of pieces of silver crashing to the floor around her feet.
“What the hell?!” King jumped. “Need some help there?” He asked, before settling back into his seat.
King raised his hand to take another bite of his food and froze with his fork suspended in mid-air.
Junebug stood on the threshold leading to the backyard; his head was down, looking at the floor. Dingo sniffed around at his feet, whimpering now, pawing at the mud on Junebug’s shoes.
“Junebug –“ King’s voice faltered as his eyes took in the image of his son.
His clothing was soaked, dark and sticky as clumps of wet soil fell from his body to the floor around his feet. He trembled ever so slightly and more dirt fell from his curly hair, tumbling down the front of his shirt and landing on the tops of his sneakers.
When he raised his head and fixed his eyes in Carlita’s direction, she screamed. Eyes white in a pale and bloodless face; unfocused, staring…accusing. His lips parted and formed a snarl, as unintelligible words tumbled over his tongue and stung Carlita’s face.
He moved forward slowly with a lopsided shuffle, the left side of his body hung awkwardly as he seemed to drag himself across the floor toward Carlita. When he reached her, he threw himself forward against her legs and she reached out to catch him.
Junebug reached up for her with a cold dirty arm and beckoned her to bend closer; she trembled as she leaned toward him.
“My turn,” Junebug whispered in her ear before her legs gave out and she fell to the floor, her body straddling the scattered pile of silverware.
