Chapter 9
June
It was about this time that I wondered if I shouldnât be more worried that Dev was dead.
Because⦠I was about to introduce him to my dad.
Everything Iâd told Dev was true. I didnât have close friends besides Aggie, mostly because I was more introverted than Bilbo thought he was and people made me nervous.
It had seemed the natural, easy thing to do⦠yesterday. To introduce this person I was enjoying time with to my family.
But it had slipped my mind at the moment that he was, in fact, dead. It usually did, even when he was translucent, because he was so vibrant to me.
But his being dead hadnât skipped Devâs mind, since heâd made that exact counterpoint to our entire ⦠experiment? being a good idea.
Yet here we were, in my dadâs driveway.
Iâd texted to let Dad know we were coming, after which heâd called and confirmed everything that Iâd sent in the text. I supposed I should be happy he could at least read texts now. That had taken him over a year of having a smart phone to figure out.
âIf youâve changed your mind about me meeting him,â Dev started, putting his hand on mine over the stick shift.
âNo! Just⦠I already said it, just take Dadâs actions with a giant grain of salt, alright? Heâs⦠from a different generation.â
âI make my own opinions,â Dev glowered. Something about him was different today, though I couldnât be quite sure what. Like he was preparing for battle. I guess Iâd feel on edge, too, if I were meeting his Ma.
I popped the door open and got out, speeding over to his side. âDonât let go,â I cautioned, squeezing his hand a little tighter than necessary. âDad might think itâs weird, or even comment on it, but me having a friend is all the weird I want to deal with todayânot my friend is a ghost weird.â
âRight.â Devâs expression lightened and he gave my hand a squeeze.
As we walked up the gravel driveway, the gravel crunched beneath my feet just as it had when Iâd walked up the drive from being dropped by the school bus. Only when Iâd been a child, Mom was waiting for me and Aggie to come home. Now, Mom lived on the other side of town with her dogs. Sheâd never be at the top of this driveway again. Dadâs drinking had taken care of that. Even my mother could only put up with it for so long.
The sound of a chainsaw from the backyard recalled my attention to the present. Shouts accompanied it, and I sighed. I should have realized from the four cars in the driveway. If Dad wasnât off at a site, he was here, working on something in the yard with the Workinâ Guys. Itâd been the same crew for most of my life.
âDev,â I said, as we got closer to the noise. âJust to warn you, there will probably be some ⦠mention of our choices.â
âBut itâs legal now, right?â Dev raised his chin.
