Hit the Floor

1157 AD

The world had turned on itself by the 12th Century. China was torn between the Song and Jin dynasties while Europe and Middle Asia imploded. Countries attempted to show their strength by overpowering their neighbors as well as forcing religion and political views onto the seized citizens within. Humanity devoured itself with every opening it found. Worse, the dreadful crusades were full stride, and the Europeans would soon defeat Saladin by 1192 AD. This only added to segregation and hatred among the different people who made up the world.

None of that was my concern. I had no desire to undo the travesties mankind laid upon itself. I had one task: Be the guardian of the sleeping immortals formerly known as the Levites. For the first time, there in 1157 AD, more than one reincarnation gathered in a single city. It was alarming. I feared if they met, it could cause a complication to the spell. I went to the city of Hama to see what exactly had happened, especially in a place so dangerous as this wartime city.

Hama was under siege; the sting of the crusaders and Seljuks still played out in dark alleys and the underground of the city. Getting around was dangerous, and Talib no longer dared to go anywhere without his falchion at his side. Hood on, scarf over his mouth, he went to inspect why so many had gathered in one area and why he sensed more than three immortals within the city boundaries. The city streets were a battleground between the Sultan and competing rulers who attempted to overthrow him. Talib stepped back into the shadows as a pack of soldiers marched down the market lane. The leader was Geliah’s reincarnation, and he carried out his orders with an unusual amount of bliss. They were out to disrupt merchants who supported anyone other than the Sultan, and the fear it created was sparking his element. It was a terrifying observation; this was the first time someone’s powers had appeared since the spell started over two thousand years ago.

“You there!” A grin snaked across Geliah’s face as he pointed his sword at a merchant. “I do not recall your support to the Sultan!”

Marching up to the stall, the merchant coward in fear. A wave of it hit Geliah, and his muscles tensed as his excitement increased. Gripping the edge of the table, he flung it, and the merchant’s wares landed on top of him. Geliah let out a bellowing laugh as the man fell back under the clatter of items. The soldiers shifted uncomfortably at the inhuman strength he had displayed. On the table, the merchant had been selling large clay water pots and iron ingots for blacksmiths to use in repairs; the heavy table should have taken two or more soldiers to flip. The merchant pleaded with Geliah as his brow bled from the heavy wares that had crashed into him.

“Pay tax to the Sultan for safety or leave,” snorted Geliah.

Talib sighed and closed his eyes as he thought about what was unfolding in the street before him.
