“I’m not quite sure how to explain it,” Feruda said, sitting next to Dagny on a stone bench in the courtyard. “How much do you know?”

“Nothing,” Dagny replied. “Grete just left in the middle of the night. I had a feeling she ran off with you and Marfisi because of what happened that day in the woods.”

Feruda nodded, her eyebrows connected into a single, wispy line above her pale eyes. “I thought you would be upset with us for taking her.”

“Oh, I am,” Dagny said, then raised and lowered a shoulder. “But what good does any of that do now? I’m here… We should get along.”

“We should’ve handled it better,” Feruda admitted. “Gretchen didn’t want you getting involved.”

“It was already too late for that.” Dagny thought of Jago and the others from Limer’s Town. “There were men who tried to kill me in those woods.”

Feruda narrowed her eyes slightly. “Kill?”

“Never mind. I shouldn’t have said anything. I don’t want to make things worse.” It was a bad memory, and Dagny didn’t want to dwell on it.

The girl seemed willing to let the comment go. “She cares about you,” Feruda said, gesturing at the building behind them. “Even if Gretchen doesn’t say so. She does.”

Her sister sure hadn’t acted like it. “Does she even talk about me? In all the months that she’s been here, does my name even come up?”

Feruda hesitated. “There’s… been a lot going on.”

“I see.” Dagny stood and twisted her hands together. “I’ve been thinking about Grete constantly. Every single day since she left. But she’s been… focused on other things, apparently. I don’t know. I guess I was hoping…”

“Hoping? For what?”

“That it wasn’t too late. That I could still salvage something between us. That she hadn’t changed so much in the time we lost. That I could still have a sister.”

“She’s still your sister,” Feruda said. “Even if things are not how you wanted them to be.”

“I know.” Dagny sighed and stared up at Grete’s room. “Maybe I should just leave. Go back to Rork.”

“Okay,” Feruda said. “If that’s all it took, then maybe you should.”

Dagny faced her. “Really?”

“If that’s all it takes for you to dismiss her. Then yes, maybe you’re not meant to be here.” Feruda stood up. “This isn’t about you, Dagny. None of it is. Gretchen didn’t want you to get hurt, that’s all. Don’t be so selfish.”

Dagny realized she was gawking at Feruda, then quickly closed her mouth and swallowed. “That’s painfully honest.”

Feruda kept her voice calm and easy. “I don’t mean to attack you. But, really. Either be here and support Gretchen, or don’t.”

Dagny closed her eyes, feeling horribly embarrassed. “What’s going on with her? Why is she so important to this place?”

“Gretchen knows things about the Long Ago—things no one else does. Not even the Weavers in Sanctuary.”

“What kinds of things?”

“Gaps in the histories, names of the Scarred Children, the full body of melodies… Everyone was skeptical at first. But then, Gretchen led us to the First Step. Sealed and hidden away for thousands of years.
