CHAPTER 15
Something disturbing occurred after Hayden’s speech. I momentary looked toward Linda and Larry. He had an unusual glare. Everyone but Larry was standing. His eyes opened wide and faced off in one direction. He sat still in his chair and didn’t flinch, blink, or move, a frightening and particularly scary situation. I continued clapping, but went over and stooped down, looked him in his face and said, “paperclip.” That did nothing, absolutely nothing. Panicking, this time I shouted, “Paperclip!”
Gene Autry and his wife glanced over, but their praise and applause continued. The critics who remained didn’t applaud, but harshly ridiculed Hayden’s speech. But it reached a point where our table guests became increasingly concerned about Larry’s total lack of response.
When the applause ended, Hayden came down off of the stage and back to the table, noticing instantly Larry’s disconnection with reality. He actually tried slapping his face. Not surprisingly, this method didn’t produce positive results. Nothing happened as a result of this embarrassing act of severity. It was even more upsetting because Linda seemed unconcerned while playing the part of his new wife.
“What’s gone wrong, Professor?” My question was emotional, necessitating a response.
“It appears he’s in a deep hypnotic trance most likely brought on by some key command. I wonder if this condition is due to something he heard in my speech.”
I didn’t want to blow Larry’s true identity by using his name and, sure, his assumed name would be meaningless to him, so instead I said, “Hey, can you hear me? Can you move?”
Larry was completely numb, seemingly disconnected with his surroundings. Something was wrong, though most in the auditorium were unaware of our table event. They kept busy either departing the banquet room, visiting with one another or heading for the dance floor.
James Roosevelt, however, didn’t want to leave until everyone assured he was alright. Gene and his wife evidently felt the same. For as long as eight to ten minutes, despite trying everything, there was no change in Larry’s movement, suffering from a lack of motivational ability while locked inside a catatonic state. Hayden suggested the condition might be akinesia. Skin color faded, and the whites of his eyes turned a blood red. His lips turned an almost dark brown. We all observed a nightmarish scene that would give any horror flick competition.
The band began an invitational riff with a jazzy number. Coincidentally, the music was in the vein of a requiem. Surprisingly, Larry moved into action due to the pounding melody. His jerky movements became robotic like, terminating his silence and immobility by slowly standing.
Without warning, out of his mouth came unintelligible and volatile sounds. Loud spoken distorted words became verbally confusing and appeared driven by a demonized mental state. Then suddenly, words became tangible and clearly understandable, spoken with an unusually deep and eerie resonating clear voice. “Sar ha Olam! Resurgam! Hear my words well! Light the lamp of Lucifer. Learn ye well the map of the stars and your place. As once ye are led, ye may once again return at your will.
