Draw shapes or symbols that represent the word.

For my example, I drew an umbrella because it symbolizes being covered and safe to me.

(Optional) Brainstorm other words and images that you associate with the first word.

I added words such as protected and happy because these are the feelings I associate with feeling safe.

Exploring multimedia

The purpose of this exercise is to begin expanding your toolkit beyond the use of writing and coloring.

Before beginning, gather your supplies: In addition to writing utensils (choose any combination of pens or pencils in a variety of colors), you need glue and/or double-sided sticky tape, and some old photos and/or magazine pages that you don’t mind cutting.

If you want to use personal photos for this activity, consider using your own creative journal notebook instead of the space provided in this book.
