Josh had gotten used to strange things since starting work at the Quik-Mart, but somehow he was still surprised to wake up and find his vampire boyfriend sitting shirtless on the couch, sharing a joint with his roommate, both of them wrapped up in a game of Zombies vs. Zombies. “Shotgun!” Doug was saying, the joint clamped between his lips like a toothpick. “Dude, go for the head!”
“I’ve fought actual zombies,” Colin said. “I know how to kill them.”
Josh stood there, scratching his head, deciding which thing to ask first. After a few seconds of yawning and scratching, he went with, “I thought you were gone ’til Tuesday night, Doug.”
“Supposed to be.” Doug’s thumbs were busy on his controller. “But my parents had a fight, and Uncle Henry got involved, and it just turned into a mess. I got out of there before the cops arrived.”
“The cops?” Josh wasn’t sure how many of Doug’s colorful family stories were true and how many were exaggerations, but ever since Doug had gotten that collect call from his Great Aunt Louise from the Oakland Correctional Institute, Josh had decided he was happy with his ignorance. “Uh, sorry.”
Doug shrugged, pausing to take a stiff toke. “What did I expect from an anniversary party?”
Josh and Colin were supposed to have had a couple of days to themselves, for as long as Colin could stand to be in this world, but it’d only been one night and a few hours. Still, not too bad. And while last night had been fun—it was great not to have sex in the stockroom or on the roof, and to actually be able to sleep afterward—it was pretty obvious that Colin was starting to get uncomfortable. He’d fidgeted a lot in his sleep, and at one point Josh had woken up to find Colin scratching his arm until it’d actually bled. Obviously he hadn’t exaggerated that the longer a hell denizen—well, citizen of Dev—was outside the portal, the more it felt like their skin was going to fall off. Perhaps it was for the best that Colin would get to go home early.
Josh headed to the kitchenette. “What’s for breakfast?”
“You askin’ me? Dude, I didn’t bring home a pizza,” Doug replied.
“I had a Snickers,” Colin said.
“The breakfast of champions.” Doug decapitated an onscreen zombie with a souped-up weed whacker.
Josh opened the fridge. “I thought that was a beer and a Slim Jim.” It seemed he had a choice of cold Chinese food, cold pizza, or something that may very well have been, at one time, an avocado. Or maybe a kiwi fruit. An apple? It was green and roughly spherical, whatever it was.
“No, that’s the redneck breakfast of champions,” Doug said. “Beer and a doughnut is the Canadian breakfast of champions.”
Josh grabbed a diet soda and shut the fridge. “Do you have a list of these?”
“Not really. I could make one if you wanted to keep it handy.”
“I should make up my own, otherwise I’ll never learn.” Searching the cupboards,
