11 ‘Families are made in heaven and on earth’

‘Father of orphans and protector of widows, is God in his holy habitation. God gives the desolate a home to live in; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity’ (Psalm 68:5 & 6a).

John Sentamu writes:

God’s heart reaches out for the most vulnerable in our society. To be an orphan or to be widowed, when this psalm was written, meant having no means of protection and facing destitution. But God notices these people, and his desire is to look after those in need.

Friends, this is not some sort of disembodied hope – it takes people who share that heart of God to make that longing a reality.

In Rachel and Nigel’s story we have an amazing tale of family, a family that is created by putting into practice the love of God. Rachel responds with God’s heart to people without family. Did you know that in Yorkshire and Humberside there are currently 800 children who need fostering or adoption? The needs of those orphaned and those widowed are not confined to the past.

As a parent and foster parent of four children who have now grown up, I am aware of the joys and challenges involved. I am also the sixth of thirteen children, so you can imagine that our house was never quiet! But it was always the place where you knew you would find a welcome. Be inspired, Rachel’s love-in-action story is remarkable!
