I lift my eyes from the paper and squeal. “That was awesome.”

“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” Ava says. “I can’t believe there’s a guy at our high school who gives such awesome advice.”

“I need to know who he is!” Chloe says. “Kendell swears he only communicates through email and refuses to reveal his identity. But I’m pretty sure he’s a senior.”

“How do you know that?” I ask.

“He mentioned in one of the emails that he wishes he could do the column forever but might need to quit soon. That has to mean it’s because he’s graduating this year.”

“Ugh, what a bummer,” I say. “I’ll miss reading his column every issue.”

“I wonder if someone will take his place,” Willow muses.

“No one could replace him,” Chloe says with a heavy sigh.

“How are you all so sure he’s even a guy?” Liam asks. “For all we know, it could be a girl pretending to be a guy.”

We all frown at him.

He shrugs. “What? It’s totally possible. I can’t imagine a guy writing half the stuff he writes. I’m telling you, it’s a girl. Why else would he keep his identity a secret?”

We all exchange glances.

“He’s a guy,” Chloe says as she hugs her upper arms. “It has to be a guy.”

“Because you’re totally in love with him!” Ava says.

“Am not!”

“Are too!”

“I can’t be in love with someone who doesn’t exist.”

“Yes you can.”

“Whatever.” She puts the paperback in her bag. “Promise you won’t share it with anyone until the issue comes out tomorrow. Kendell will kill me if she knew I stole the rough copy.”

Willow puts her hands on her hips. “And who exactly would we tell? I don’t see anyone lining up to be our friends. Not that we need them.”

“No way,” Ava says. “We’re the Junior Musketeers and we just need each other.”

“Oh, there’s also a reminder in the paper to buy tickets for the fall dance,” Chloe reminds us. “Have we decided what we’re doing?”

Willow shrugs. “You know dances aren’t my thing.”

“I want to go,” I admit. “I wish a guy would ask me.”

“Same,” Chloe says.

“Well, I don’t need a guy to ask me,” Ava enlightens us. “I want to go to the fall dance with my Musketeers.”

“Ava’s right,” Liam agrees. “We don’t need anyone else. Just each other.”

“Yay!” I say.

Willow scowls. “Fine, but only because I want to hang out with my best friends.”

“Cool.” Chloe smiles as she walks back to the pool. “Who wants to race me?”
