HOW TO PRACTISE

An easy way to practise is to call a couple of friends and work through your pro-forma several times. A variation on this is not to use a telephone, but to sit back-to-back with one of your supporters and practise. Because you’re deprived of eye contact this set-up mimics a telephone conversation and you can stop and start, swap roles and generally explore and experiment more easily than if you’re on the telephone. And it’s a fun thing to do, which for me is always a good way to learn.

However you choose to practise, people do tend to perform better after they have had an opportunity to work in a safe environment to build up their confidence. In my experience, the more calls I made the easier it became. By making several calls back-to-back and starting with the opportunity that seemed the most remote, (and therefore one I didn’t mind mucking up quite so much), I found that by the time I had made six calls one after another I was full of energy and ready to talk to the person in the company that I really wanted to go and work for.

Naturally there were times when I was told to go away and I can remember talking to one personal assistant five times before I decided I was not going to get anywhere with that particular company. That’s okay; I kept my smile intact and just crossed them off my campaign list.

SUMMARY Cold calling can be one of the hardest things to get started with, so give yourself an easy target to reach, such as to have made five practice calls in the first two weeks of your job hunting activity. Use a pro-forma to give yourself a good process by having a script to follow and you might be surprised at how quickly you develop your skills and your confidence. If you want to get ahead of the competition then being able to follow up on speculative letters or emails is an important skill to have and building in practice time and setting achievable targets is a worthwhile part of your campaign activity.
