Chapter Eight

For two months the Brigade manned its sector of the front line, playing its part in Allied Command’s preparations for the final offensive that would complete the liberation of Italy. As ordered, it kept the south bank of the Senio clear of Germans and German activity. It improved its forward positions, and mounted aggressive patrols across the river, taking prisoners for interrogation, and confusing the enemy about the area designated for the eventual crossing in force.

During this time, the Brigade’s 5,500 men grew frustrated at the interminable waiting for the order to launch their attack. Bored men became restless, and the Brigaders sought normal soldierly diversions. Some of these came to light in Staff HQ’s Routine Orders for all units, drawn up by Acting Major David Spector:
