Chapter 11

JETT STRODE INTO THE office late that afternoon, a cup of coffee in his hand. He’d gotten Anna settled into his home for the most part, but work couldn’t be avoided. Ford and Sam had landed in Seattle thirty minutes ago, and he’d gotten word from the Feds that the op was a go. Pacific Time was three hours behind Eastern Standard Time, so the men would have time to kill before the conference ended for the day. And then they’d keep eyes on Amir until the grab later this evening. Jett needed to confirm the pilot he paid a hefty sum to would be able to rendezvous at the scheduled time. McChord Field was about forty miles south of Seattle. The Air Force would allow Jett’s chartered plane to land and take off. The military might not be running this op, but they would allow a small plane to land there as a favor to some higher-ups.

Jett smirked. He tried to avoid military installations when he could. They didn’t have a choice in this particular instance. While the men had flown commercial into the city, leaving with a diplomat was an entirely different beast. He didn’t need records of the flight appearing on the books. Shadow Security tended to work overseas, but he didn’t take issue with conducting missions on U.S. soil when needed.

And hell. A terrorist plotting against multiple large universities? They needed to know how far this network stretched. Students in the country on foreign visas were vetted before being allowed entry, but Amir could have radicalized them over the past year. Other threats could be on the horizon. The situation was a clusterfuck.

Clara looked up from the receptionist’s desk as Jett came in, saying hello. “We’ve had several calls this morning about new clients seeking security services. I’ve forwarded the details to you to look over.”

“Thank you, Clara,” he said with a smile. “You always keep things running smoothly around here when I’m gone. As I mentioned, I had something to tend to earlier.”

“It’s no problem. Luke stopped in this morning and is working out, I believe, but it’s been fairly quiet aside from the phone ringing.”

“Ah. That reminds me. I know you’re overworked with the increase in business we do here.”

“Not at all, sir,” she said, suddenly looking flustered.

“You’re doing amazing,” Jett reassured her, taking a sip of his coffee. “But I’d like to bring on additional admin staff. Sometimes the team and I convene on the weekends, and your hours are strictly Monday through Friday. We could use another hand.”

“Your business is growing,” she agreed.

“I’ve got a new hire as well for the security side. Gray Pierce. I’ll be sending you some information to process for him. He’s an old Army buddy of mine. He’ll be a good addition to the team.”

“No problem. I’ll put through all the information once you send it over and get him whatever he needs.”

“Excellent. With our workload, I might be hiring additional security staff in the future as well.
