Chapter Twelve

Jetson

It was the fucking shittiest day ever.

The guys thought I was a little pussy they needed to protect, and it wasn’t just because I was wounded. They always gave me that shit. But now, I was really in no position to go out and prove myself. I’d never felt so useless.

So I decided to have a little pity party, just me, myself, and I.

After I drained the bottle of vodka, I went upstairs and found myself some more of Nora’s Vicodin, right where she left them on the bathroom sink. I sucked back a couple more. Then I must’ve passed out on the sofa because it felt like only a second later that someone was slapping me awake. I tore open my eyes to see Nora standing there, gazing at me with a worried expression on her face.

“Where’d you get the clothes?”

I pulled myself up to a sitting position and tried to get my eyes to stay open. My head ached. I’d fallen asleep in an unnatural position, and my neck was stiff as hell. “My brothers made a little pit stop.”

Her eyes widened. “You mean the other Cobras? They were here?”

I nodded.

“Oh.” Her eyes trailed down my t-shirt clad middle, to my open jeans. Because of the wound, I couldn’t button them up. I could almost see her pulse thrumming in her throat. She was practically shaking. The poor girl needed to learn how to say what she wanted. “You okay?”

I gave her an amused smirk. “Sure. Yeah.”

She lifted up the empty bottle. “You paired this with the Vicodin I gave you?”

“Yeah. And two more. But before you go—”

I was going to say, before you go freaking out, but she was already there. “Two more?” Her eyes bulged. “How are you even awake?”

I grinned. “Listen, baby. When it comes to deadening pain, I’m a pro. I know what I can handle.”

She pressed her lips together. “Do you do illegal drugs?”

I shook my head. “Just alcohol. Promise.”

She sat down at my feet and took a deep breath. “Oh, my gosh. I’m just realizing, I don’t even fuckin’ know you. I must be crazy.”

She looked at me in a way that kind of demanded an answer. Yeah, if she’d ended things with her man because of me, it’d be crazy. “Yeah. But it’s not wrong. That other shithead you’ve been with. He was wrong.”

She scoffed, sadly. “I tried to break up with him. And you know what he said to me? ‘We’ll talk later’. That’s the kind of guy he is. Every time I want something, he thinks he can just change my mind.”

“That’s ‘cause you let him,” I said. “Don’t let him. You’re a fucking doctor, sweetheart. You have clout. So say what you mean and mean what you say.”

“I know. I should. It’s just . . . we’ve been together forever. I know Michael and I are wrong. I’ve known it for a long time. But it doesn’t make breaking up any less scary.”

She grabbed her purse and rummaged through it, pulling out a little jewel case.
