Chapter Six

Trinity

Messing up a man’s life… check. Passing out in the cabin afterward… double check. Freaking out and taking an Uber all the way back to Colorado Springs… that’s a disgusting triple check.

I rub my temples and slide my sunglasses down over my eyes, staring out at the window as bales of hay, sheep, and cows go by. My car still in the same spot it was last night. I’ll have to call a tow for it later. I don’t have the energy for anything right now. The fact that I got so drunk that I nearly had sex with a guy I barely knew, then ruined his life, is enough for the next twenty-four hours… at least.

Still though, I think I’ll have to change my number when I get home. He’s called me half a dozen times and sent numerous texts that I’m forcing myself not to look at. I mean, who says they’re good? They could be bad. He could be telling me how shitty I am for leaving the cabin when he told me not to. He could be blaming me for messing the one chance up he had with his daughter. He could be calling me a whore for nearly sleeping with him last night.

I laugh now at the entire thought. What was I thinking? He’s easily in his mid-thirties, has kids, has lived his life, had real experiences. I know nothing about any of that. God, I think I was using him as a pole last night.

The phone buzzes again. This time a text from my mother. I squeeze my eyes shut and ignore that one as well.

The wedding.

I’d completely forgotten about the wedding. I guess twenty-four hours can get worse. She’s going to rip me apart, and in front of everyone. My sister will too. It’ll be a family affair. Forget the nuptials, it’s more fun to berate Trinity.

My eyes close and for a while, I just ride. If the Uber driver is an axe murderer, then well… my life just got a lot easier.

I’m not sure how much time has gone by, but I wake to a deep voice of a man trying to wake me. “Ma’am,” the older man says. “We’re here.” The voice increases in tone until he’s nearly screaming it and I’m pulled out of a dream about sheep flying fighter jets.

I shake my head and look around, squinting as bright sunlight filters in around me. We’re at my apartment downtown, and I’d guess by the way the sun is sitting it’s nearly ten or eleven. Man, I was really out.

“Sorry,” I say, standing from the car to grab my single bag from the back seat. It’s really just my purse and a few bananas that I took from Jet’s cabin this morning. I didn’t want to stop for food, but I needed something to soak up the alcohol from last night.

The driver nods and I head inside, climbing the tall set of stairs toward my door—two hundred and three. I already hear MJ meowing.
