Jessie closed her bedroom door and peeled off her wet jeans, then decided to take a quick shower. In the backyard, Marshall worked at getting charcoal started for the hot dogs, then he would come in and wash up. If she didn't dawdle she'd be out and dressed by the time he finished.

As it happened, she'd been on the patio for several minutes, combing out her tangled hair, when Marshall stepped out in fresh clothes, his hair wet, a gym bag in his hand.

"Hope you don't mind, I used the shower." He lifted the bag in explanation. "I'll be right back."

Jessie heard a car door shut, then he came trotting back around the side of the house.

"You come prepared."

Marsh didn't miss her wary tone. "In my profession I never know where I'll be or when, so I always carry a change with me." He grinned disarmingly. "A good thing, too. Dating you is hard work."

Jessie laughed, then winced when the comb caught on a snag in her hair.

"Let me give you a hand there," Marshall offered, taking the comb from her. "The charcoal needs to burn down some yet."

Jessie started to resist, even though this was her fantasy come true, in fact, because this was her fantasy come true. But in the end, she allowed herself the indulgence.

Marshall worked the knot free and pulled the comb to the ends of her hair. Then he started at her hairline, pulling the comb slowly across her scalp and down the back of her neck. When she didn't feel the plastic teeth on her back, Jessie looked over her shoulder to find Marshall perched on the picnic table instead of on the bench. To unsnarl her hair, he had draped it over his thigh. Soon no tangles remained, and the comb made slow nonstop sweeps from hairline to hair ends. It felt absolutely delicious. Jessie drifted for some time in the sensation, then sighed.

"Do you mind me doing this?"

She chuckled. "Are you kidding? I'm only wondering if I can afford your fee."

Marshall sifted the drying hair through his fingers, fanning it across his leg, over her shoulders, just letting it fall where it would. "I couldn't charge you for something I enjoyed so much," he answered, only half teasing. Then he tipped her face up and kissed her forehead. "Time for supper."

Jessie set the table while the franks grilled, using a citronella candle for their centerpiece to discourage the few mosquitoes who'd come out with the lowering sun.

They nearly collided in the kitchen when he came in to warm the buns in the microwave and she was heading out with an armload of condiments. He kissed the end of her nose, grinned, and went on. His casual caress paired with the domesticity of the scene gave Jessie a warm, fuzzy glow. I could get to like this, she thought.

Marshall whistled an off-key tune as he removed the plate from the microwave. He and Jessie were making progress. Her thorny disposition was more a matter of occasional prickliness now, and he had a very good feeling about where they were headed.
