CHAPTER TWELVE

Jess left the saloon and walked down to the livery. When he got there, the livery man walked out with his two horses.

“I figured you’d be wantin’ your horses,” the man said. “You going after that other one?”

“Yeah, how much of a head start did he get?”

“Fifteen minutes give or take,” said the man. “He just topped that ridge over there.”

“I’ll catch up to him,” said Jess as he climbed up in the saddle.

“I suppose you killed that half-breed?”

“Yeah, the barkeep will be coming for his horse in a bit,” he replied, pitching the man a ten dollar gold piece.

“Thanks, but I think it’s best you don’t come back here again.”

“Only if I have to,” he replied as he nudged Gray into a slow gallop, heading for the rocky hillside that Crazy Eyes had rode over. When he reached the top, he looked around and didn’t see any trail dust or any signs of Crazy Eyes. He saw a large stand of timber about a mile away. He looked around for some fresh tracks and he found a set that headed straight for the trees. He followed the tracks until he got to within a few hundred feet of the tree line when a bullet hissed past his left ear.

“Son-of-a-bitch!” he exclaimed as he headed for a few oak trees about two hundred feet away. Before he reached the trees, another bullet tore a chunk of leather out of the back of his saddle right behind his left ass cheek. When he reached the trees, he flung himself out of the saddle after grabbing his Winchester rifle. He ducked behind the largest of the oak trees just as a slug slammed into the tree, knocking some dried dead branches off it, a few of them falling on his hat. Jess racked a shell into his rifle and began firing back into the tree line where he thought the shots had come from, but he had no real target to shoot at.

A few more slugs slammed into the oak tree he was standing behind and after that, he fired off several more rounds in the general vicinity of where he thought the shots were coming from. He reloaded his rifle back up to full capacity and fired off several more rounds into the trees, but there was no return fire. He leaned his back against the tree and listened for any sounds, but he heard nothing.

Either Crazy Eyes was waiting for him to come out from behind the tree thinking he might have left, or he had already left, thinking Jess would wait for a while before showing himself. Either way, Jess was stuck for the moment and he knew it. He couldn’t show himself. He had to wait or just continue to fire randomly into the trees hoping to get a lucky shot, but Crazy Eyes might already be gone.

“Damn it,” he cursed under his breath as he sat down at the bottom of the large oak tree and pulled out a piece of jerky and bit off a chunk of it.
