It is extremely important to understand why the book of Revelation was written and indeed when it was written. There are varying opinions to both of these questions, in particular as to ‘when’.

Many scholars say it was written in 96CE (but they are religious scholars with an agenda) , whereas others say it was written prior to the destruction of Jerusalem. That is the two schools of thought.

Now, the former base their evidence on only one piece of evidence, and it is that from a man called Irenaeus, the Bishop of Lyons in the second century.

Here is what he said as to the book of Revelation and its writer:

"We will not, however, incur the risk of pronouncing positively as to the name of Antichrist; for if it were necessary that his name should be distinctly revealed in this present time, it would have been announced by him who beheld the apocalyptic vision.
