Chapter Twelve

Javier

I had to get out of there. I had to get away from them, from her. I couldn’t handle looking her in the eye today. Not when all I want to do is bend her over and take her hard. I walked away and left her to fend for herself.

“Get the fuck over here,” I roar as the man I’m after tries to run. I fire off a warning shot that stops him in his tracks. He stands still, slowly turning to face me while Mateo chuckles. His hands are in the air, and the closer I get, the faster his breathing becomes. I watch his eyes, the fear of what’s to come in them. There is no escaping this, escaping me.

“Your job was to deliver the product and collect the money. How is it that my product is gone along with the money?” I ask, aiming the gun between his eyes. He doesn’t flinch, just stares straight ahead.

“Now isn’t the time for silence, pendejo.” Mateo chimes in now. The man looks between us before he speaks.

“I was jumped. What could I have done?”

“Come to me! You could have come to me and told me what happened. Instead, you hid like a bitch! You ran,” I growl as I step closer to him. Pressing the gun to his head, I pull the trigger. Blood splatters and his body falls to the floor in front of me. Mateo steps back as I turn and look around the room.

“Over a hundred thousand missing,” I say as I take in the warehouse.

“Cruz isn’t going to like this,” Mateo adds.

“No shit. I don’t like this. He wasn’t jumped, which means it isn’t far. Get the guys out there to start searching. He couldn’t have gone far with it and still be here,” I tell him. There’s no way he moved that amount of products very far from here.

Mateo pulls his phone out and makes a few calls while I wander around the nearly empty warehouse. My nerves are on edge. As each one fires off, they leave me feeling uneasy.

“Guys are on it. The body has been dug up. You ready to head over there?” I nod my head and wipe my face on my sleeve, removing tiny droplets of blood. Mateo and I walk out of the warehouse and climb in the car while the driver starts it up and pulls off.

“What happened with the two of you?” Mateo finally asks.

“Not a lot. She showed up in my room. I showed her why she should stay away.”

“Was it that simple?” he asks.

“Maybe not to her, but it was for me. She doesn’t belong with me, Mateo. I can handle being married as long as she stays away from me,” I remind him. He’s silent for a long minute before passing me a cigarette. I light it up and inhale deeply.

“What if she doesn’t stay away? The girl has a mind of her own, hermano. She doesn’t seem to care what we have to say.
