Chapter Twenty-One

I sat idly by while Paul called the pack alpha, Adam. According to him, they were friendly, but wolf packs stuck to their own—at least when it came to getting into a fight that didn’t really involve them. Wolf packs were few and far between in most places, and Georgia was no different.

Paul remained calm during their conversation. On the inside, I knew he was probably bursting at the seams, but he had to keep calm. His temper had already cost him information once. It couldn’t happen a second time, and he knew that.

“Thank you for taking the time to speak with me,” he said cordially, ending the call.

“Well?” I’d tried my best not to eavesdrop, but it was hard with my sharper hearing. Tuning things out would be a skill developed over time.

“Adam agreed to meet with you. If he sees that you’re worthy of becoming part of the pack, you will go through the initiation.”

“Initiation? I’m scared to ask what that involves.”

Paul shrugged. “I’m not the best guy to ask. All I know is that it varies from pack to pack. Basically, you’ll be going in there blind and alone. I won’t be allowed to follow you inside their camp.”

“Why not?”

“They are friendly toward me, but I’m still a cat. This is a wolf matter, and that automatically puts me out,” Paul said.

It was no different than how animals would operate in the wild. “So my being a wolf is finally coming in handy.”

Paul wrapped me up in his arms. “Looks that way, babe.” I laid my head against his chest. “I just hope I am able to make it through the initiation alive.”

He stroked my head, still holding me tight. “Don’t underestimate yourself. You aren’t the same person you used to be. You might be surprised at what you’re capable of doing.”

I removed my head from the safety of his chest and grabbed a couple of beers from his cooler. “When will it be?” Paul sipped his casually while I guzzled mine.

He took another sip. “Now. They’re already at the camp.”

“Shit.” I downed the contents of my bottle.

Paul approached me, setting his beer on the table. “Don’t start worrying. Stay calm, and trust yourself. Trust your wolf.”

Again, I found comfort in being close to him. We stood in silence, wrapped up in each other’s arms, but eventually, the embrace would have to end.
