Buddha’s Baptism Celebration

On the 8th of April Japan celebrates the birthday of Buddha, the founder of Buddhism—one of their major religions. Throughout Japan, miniature pavilions with a statue of the young Buddha are decorated with flowers and carried to Buddhist temples in colorful processions. Children who attend Buddhist study classes take turns pouring sweet tea over Buddha’s head in a form of baptism. The statue then stays in place on the temple grounds for a few days so that others may pay their respects. This ceremony, also known as the Flower Festival, often occurs during the cherry blossom season.
