Modern sports, too, have also grown enormously in the postwar years. Introduced in 1936, baseball today is a national game; it is played throughout the country and has a two-league system—Central and Pacific—each with six teams. Two of the great pinnacles of the sporting year are the spring and fall national high school baseball tournaments, held at the Hanshin Koshien Stadium in Kyushu. Soccer has also taken root, particularly in the decade or so leading up to the 2002 World Cup, following the establishment of the J. League in 1992, consisting of sixteen teams.
