CHAPTER TWENTY

Jane was beginning to feel a bit more human. Tossing what little breakfast she’d eaten and a hot shower had helped. She switched the shower off and then froze as she reached for a towel. Was that Dorothy’s voice? And Natasha? What were they both doing right outside the bathroom door? Unfortunately, it was at this moment that Jane realized she’d forgotten to bring a change of clothes into the bathroom with her. Now what?

She wrapped a towel around her torso so that it covered all the important private parts and then cracked the door open just the tiniest bit. She could see Dorothy and Natasha face-to-face.

“Dorothy?” Jane spoke through the crack in the door.

“Jane, I need to talk to you.” Dorothy sounded mad.

“Uh, now’s not really a good time.” Jane did her best to deflect a conversation.

“I’m coming in there—”

“Hey!” Dorothy pushed through the door, almost tossing Jane back into the shower. Obviously not to be left out, Natasha joined them. The bathroom was not large, and with three people in it, shrinking by the second.

“Natasha, do you mind if I talk to Jane alone for a minute?” Dorothy and Natasha stood on either side of naked, dripping Jane wrapped in her rather large towel with an image of Captain America on it.

“This is my fiancée that you’ve barged in on. I am not leaving.”

“Okay, just a minute! Can I just put on some clothes here?” Jane’s voice was louder than she’d meant for it to be. And for the first time, Natasha and Dorothy seemed to realize they’d burst in on Jane with no clothes on. Natasha’s immediate reaction was to smile, at which point Dorothy seemed to react by grabbing Natasha’s arm.

“We’ll leave and let you get dressed.” Dorothy attempted to push Natasha toward the door.

“I will leave when I want to leave.” Natasha resisted, jerking her arm away and in the process elbowing Jane in the stomach.

Jane whirled her arms in the air for a moment trying to regain her balance before the small bath mat slipped out from under her, and with legs and arms flailing, she sailed backward, taking the shower curtain and rod down with her. Seeing what was happening, Dorothy tried to stop Jane’s fall by grabbing for her, but all she managed to do was save Captain America. She realized instantly that she had the towel and Jane didn’t. As she bent over to try to cover Jane with the large bath towel, she slipped on the wet floor and fell right on top of Jane into the tub.

Natasha was the only one still standing. She was standing between Dorothy’s legs, with an arm around each leg, trying to pull her up and off Jane when Ethan appeared at the door of the bathroom.

Everyone froze. He lifted his sunglasses to no doubt get a clearer view of the scene. “I guess I’ll shower later.” He lowered his sunglasses, turned, and headed toward his room.

The minute he walked away, everyone was in motion again.
