Hayes

I watch as our sleeping beauty’s breathing evens out. I’m amazed she’s carrying my baby. Dad’s face when she announced it’s mine had a small smile on it, so I know Dad’s happy she’s carrying his first grandchild. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of them were secretly happy about it.

She gets to graduate with us and go off to college at the same time we do, too! This is amazing! For that reason, I’m happy she’s pregnant. We don’t have to deal with that year away from each other again—to be honest, those first two times almost broke me. This time would have for sure, because she would be a few hours away from us. From the beginning, none of us has been able to stay away from Jamison, and we would have been here every weekend to see her.

She turns to her back, puckering her lips. I lean down and give her a soft kiss, which makes her smile.

“I love you, Hayes,” she mumbles.

My chest swells with joy and pride. She knows my kiss and said she loves me.

I lean down to her ear. “I love you, too. Always.”

Tyrone walks in the door. “I got her. Your turn.”

I nod, kissing her forehead before I walk out the door.

Dad intercepts me on the way to Matt’s house. “You have my first grandchild in there. Make sure you take care of our girl and your baby. Understand?”

“Yes, sir.” I knew he was happy about Jamison’s pregnancy.

“Anything you need, anything at all, you call me. I’ll be putting a little extra in your account every month so you don’t have to worry about anything money-wise, but come to me first for whatever else you may need, okay?” He claps me on my shoulder.

“Definitely, Dad.” I close my eyes, relieved that we have support.

“You’re not alone in this. All your parents are here for you. Just because we put you in the house by yourselves doesn’t mean that we don’t love you or won’t be there for you all. Remember to call whenever...” His lip lifts on one side. “But call me first.” I nod, and he pulls me in for a hug, patting my back. “I love you, son. Go help your friends finish getting packed.”

“Thanks, Dad.” I watch him stroll in the direction of our house before I walk to Matt’s house to get him packed. This is going to be a lot better than I thought.
