Chapter Fourteen

Gracie sat up in the huge bed covered with pillows and warm furs, at first confused but then recalling all that had happened the previous day. It was dawn, and while the baron had allowed her to retire early last eve, accepting her complaint of a headache, she’d have to face him today in his great hall. Kyla opened her eyes to stare at her.

“Now will you tell me?” she asked.

“Tell you what?” Gracie played with the coverlet on the bed so she would not have to meet her friend’s gaze.

“You carry such a burden that I can see it in your eyes, but you keep telling me naught is wrong. What is it, Gracie?”

Gracie sighed so forcefully, it might have blown the covers off the bed if she’d aimed correctly. It was time for her to be honest with Kyla. “It’s your brother.”

“What did Jamie do now? I heard him say he didn’t want to be your protector anymore, but I think ‘twas too painful for him. He did not like seeing you with other lads.”

Gracie stared at Kyla, wishing there was some truth to that. “I love Jamie, or rather, I did.”

“Truly? You love my brother? But why did you not tell me, or him?”

She could feel tears burning behind her eyes again. “Because.” She shrugged her shoulders.

Kyla continued to stare at her.

“Because I did not know if he felt the same way. I did not wish to embarrass myself. For a while I thought he might be interested in me, but then he left for Cameron land.”

“I told you he was confused. I thought all along he had feelings for you. The situation with Mac was so devastating for him. He was running away. Gracie, you must tell me everything.”

There was a quiet knock on the door just before it opened.

“Yes,” Gracie said tentatively, exchanging a glance with Kyla.

A servant opened the door and stuck her head through the crack. “May I help you, my lady? The baron sent me to see if there’s aught you need.”

Gracie almost shook her head in refusal, but then thought for a moment. Mayhap she could delay her trip to the hall. “Would it be possible for a bath? I feel dirty from my trip yesterday.”

The maid entered, closed the door, and bowed to her. “Of course, my lady. I will send a bath up shortly and advise the baron.”

Kyla added, “Please wait a quarter of an hour before you send the bath up. And we would like some porridge with it, please.”

“Of course, my lady.” The maid nodded and disappeared, closing the door behind her.

Gracie giggled. “You act as though you’ve had your own maid for years now.”

Kyla shrugged her shoulders. “I thought I’d try.” She laughed. “It worked, did it not? Now tell me the rest of your story.”

Gracie nodded. It felt good to talk about her feelings so openly. For much too long, she had held them all inside. “I started to feel differently about Jamie when I moved to the keep.
