CHAPTER 13

DEEPEST, DARKEST AFRICA

We all need our friends and contacts. In previous times it was known as ‘old school tie’, a phrase which, these days, bears something of an unacceptable connotation. Nowadays it’s known as ‘networking’, which is apparently quite OK. Whichever, it came in useful in my relationship with Mike Crook. I had hardly known him in the RAF; even when I’d taken over from him as a flight commander on 6 Squadron we’d had no handover, as he’d left before I arrived. But we knew of each other, which later came in handy as I sought to begin my civil flying career. For, when ordered to attend an airline assessment session in some dreadfully-unstable old link trainer, I was relieved and delighted to find that Crooky was the checking officer. I’m sure my performance in that horrible-to-fly machine was appalling, but I got away with it. And later I was grateful to Mike, as my trainer, for teaching me much of what I needed to know before being let loose with passengers.

Nowadays I meet him regularly at the lunches enjoyed by our group of knackered old Norfolk Jaguar pilots, and I’m delighted that he joins us here in recounting a tale of a little-known aspect of Jaguar ops – that of the Nigerian air force.
