“Madison and Morgan, we have all the proof we need to have your mother committed, but are you sure you really want to take this step?” The attorney looks at my sister and me.

I turn to look at her. I know what I want to do. Mom went on the rampage again with another fire station. This time I couldn’t get there to help Madison, and Mom attacked her too. I look at my sister sporting a black eye from where our mother hit her. Mom is currently on a seventy-two hour hold again, but now the courts are involved.

“Yes, I’m ready to do this,” Madison says without missing a beat.

“Me too.” I’m pissed that she hurt Madi and an officer. “She needs help before she really hurts someone.”

“I agree, but maybe the courts will require her to stay at the hospital.” He tries again.

“No, she needs to know she can’t do this anymore. We’ve been putting up with her doing this for years.” Madison grips the chair with her right hand, her left held in her lap.

“Has she abused either of you in the past?” The attorney looks between. I bite my bottom lip because I don’t want to answer that question.

“Not me,” Madison says and then turns to look at me. “But she has attacked Morgan several times since I’ve been home. Verbally and physically.”

It’s strange that I would knock a person on their ass for hitting me, but I can’t raise a hand to the woman who didn’t really raise me. She birthed me and then gave up on us both.

The attorney looks at me. “Morgan?”

“After Madison left for the Army, she hit me a few times. Mostly I avoided her and knew when she was in a bad place. Since Madi was in the hospital, she has gotten worse verbally.” I look down at my lap.

“Okay. Then I agree this is the correct step. I suggest both of you get into counseling if you aren’t already so we can prove to the judge you are working on yourselves and so that her attorney can’t say it’s some crazy revenge on your part.”

“We are both already in counseling,” I tell him. “Madi with the VA, and I started seeing one recently myself.” I made the call right after New Year’s.

“Good. I’m filing the paperwork today to have her committed until the hearing, and we’ll go from there. Because you are requesting to be her power of attorney and taking conservatorship over her, I suggest you go back to her apartment and get more pictures along with getting it cleaned up so the court can see you are serious about your commitment.” We both nod at him before we make our way out of his office. After Mom was arrested this last time, Madison went to her apartment and found out she was living in squalor. That was another reason we decided to do this. The attorney also talked us into getting restraining orders against her until she’s fully committed.
