Chapter Seventeen
On Monday Bob was in the gym by 7:00. He trained hard for a full hour and a half, and cooled himself down with a ten-minute shower. He returned to the bank fit and focused but unable to stop perspiring for a good thirty minutes. He watched and studied the staff all day. He looked for signs and signals, little clues that would tell him that something was wrong. He watched the juniors; he watched the managers and he paid particular attention to Mackenzie, flitting in and out of his office all day. He seemed nervous, on edge, or was it just Bobâs imagination?
On Tuesday morning the bank staff seemed different, nervous, and yet strangely and perversely excited. There was a buzz of anticipation; no one would be late tomorrow, that was assured. They were looking forward to the drama that would hopefully unfold. Bob knew exactly how they would perform. Some of them would act out the drama and others would grin like village idiots. Some might try to be heroes to impress their colleagues. Their work would suffer today, tasks would be left, mundane duties neglected. They were buzzing, and yet nobody had uttered a word.
On Wednesday Bob opened his eyes at 4:10. He had woken naturally. No sudden noise, no alarm, no children crying.
He was wide awake and it was pointless trying to get back to sleep. He wandered downstairs and clicked on the kettle. The hot tea cleansed his mouth as he sat in the dark alone. The house was quiet, even the dogs remained in their beds, their natural body clocks telling them it was too early to get up.
He looked for something to do, something to occupy his mind. He made another cup of tea and packed the new gym bag. The sports holdall had different items in it today. Items Bob had kept hidden for many weeks: a childrenâs clown mask, a plastic replica gun, and a thin sports tracksuit two sizes too big.
There were also two shoe inserts, which would increase his height by about two inches. His feet just about fit in the shoes; it was a very uncomfortable way to walk but the soft backs of the trainers made it just about bearable. The CCTV cameras would capture his every move. The experts would analyse the footage, complete their calculations and establish the suspect to be six foot in height. The tracksuit on top of the full business suit would also give the appearance of a far larger man, all designed to throw them off the trail.
Bob had even practised trying to walk in a different style. A short stepped bounce with a slight swagger, his head floating like a long distance runner or a kitsch nodding dogâs head. It had taken many weeks, but he had perfected a completely new style of walking and he was able to turn it on at will; the heel inserts helped.
He sat in the kitchen for well over an hour, thinking, planning, and worrying.
