Magica deSpell

Magica deSpell (obviously a nom de plume) was a sorceress of the first rank. From her cottage on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius, near Naples, she practiced free-lance magic for many years. Finally she believed she could make an amulet that would guarantee instant wealth if it were fused from coins from wealthy men's fortunes. She bought a dime from Scrooge for a dollar, but when he discovered he'd accidentally given her the first dime he'd ever owned he rushed to get it back. He suddenly realized that the dime was a dear symbol to him. Magica was delighted to find it was Old Number One, for it would have the most power. She had the old ditchdigger's dime almost melted in Vesuvius' fiery furnace before the kids were able to lasso her and get it back.36 After this, Scrooge took a lot more care of Old Number One. He had inventor Gyro Gear loose make him an unbreakable chain that he wore, holding the dime, around his neck.

Magica lured him with a magical letter to an island off Italy, where she also located the wand of Circe, able to turn men to beasts. Not until the kids were turned to pigs and Donald first to a goat and then a turtle did they manage to save the dime and gain back their normal shapes. After this Scrooge kept Old Number One in a special case in the bin itself.43

He also assigned a fleet of detectives to shadow Magica constantly. He was always able to counter her most magical attacks, including that from a wand able to conjure up horrible weather and rain down meteors. She'd learned something of Circe's formula from the workshop on the island, though, and through transforming herself into Scrooge she almost managed to make off with the

dime. Only the kids noticed that the "Scrooge" in the bin didn't have an ink smudge on his head as the real one had from one of Magica's last attacks and saved the day.43

They next met in Bagdad, oddly enough. Magica had read of a flying carpet that was drawn to a fabulous treasure when reading some old sorcery tablets, and came to see if the rug was still around. Scrooge was nearby buying some rugs from a rug merchant as a side trip from a tour of his many enterprises. Magica couldn't afford the rug, but discreetly allowed Scrooge to learn of it and he bought it. Thanks to the Junior Woodchucks Guidebook they discovered that the magical carpet was really woven with some antigravity metal compounds activated by spring water. After Magica attempted to steal it transformed as a bird, they went to the treasure, also taking the powerful lodestone that attracted the rug. Magica, transformed into a roc, almost got it and did succeed in destroying the rug-but was stopped when the kids threw the lodestone at her. This stone, the ancient Curse of Persia, was a powerful anti-magic weapon of the ancients. It de-sorcerized Magica, making her incapable of ever performing real magic again.
