Kari wasn’t sure where things were going. She was only sure that this had been the most amazing day of her life. Jack was now a knight of the realm. What did it all mean? She wasn’t sure, but she did know that he was being treated as an equal, not an employee, even by the duchess. That was confusing, but very, very gratifying. She thought back to the young girl she’d been at the beginning of the summer and she hardly recognized her. And now she was with the man she loved, and it seemed things might work out the way she’d always wanted. So much had changed.

Some detectives showed up to question her about the kidnapping. The men involved were all in custody and one of them was providing a lot of information. As suspected they were all members of the December Radicals. They had hoped to use her as a hostage. A number of their leaders had been captured during the liberation struggle the year before and they had been planning to use her as a bargaining chip in order to free them. The detectives took her statement and made an appointment for her to come tomorrow for further questioning. She went through it all with so much more confidence, just having Jack at her side. They contacted the hospital to check on Greg and Mr. Barbera, both of whom were being treated for minor wounds and were going to be released that same evening. That was a relief.

So there was a sense of celebration at their family dinner, and afterwards she and Jack went for a walk in the rose garden. He tucked her hand into the crook of his arm and held her close to his side.

“Remember when you asked me to marry you and I turned you down?” he said, looking down at her.

“I remember it well.” The joy in her eyes dimmed.

“I was wondering…what if I were to reconsider?”

Her heart leaped, but she pursed her lips. “I don’t know, Jack. That proposal was made in the exuberance of the moment. I’m not sure you can hold me to it.”

He gave her a questioning look. “Are you taking it back?”

She pretended to consider. “I’ll have to think about it.”

He sighed. “Well, maybe it’s just as well,” he teased. “After all, now that I’m a knight of the realm, there’s no telling how many princesses might want to marry me.”

“Jack!”

“I mean, I suppose I shouldn’t just fall for the first princess I see….”

“You devil!”

He laughed and wrapped her in his arms where she snuggled in as though she would never leave. “I love you, Princess. I can’t fight it any longer.”

“I love you, too,” she said, sighing with satisfaction. “Is it really true? Are we really going to get our own ‘happily ever after’?”

“Yes. It’s true.” He kissed her, then looked at her lovingly. “And you’re finally going to get those kissing lessons you’ve been asking for.”

“Oh, good,” she said. “Can we start right now?”

“Your wish, Most Royal Highness, is my command.
