Sheriff’s Office. Madison.

We were right on time for our meeting with Detective Kevin McCarthy, but he wasn’t. No sign of him at the sheriff’s office at five to nine. Ardal and I waited in the meeting room for him to show up and I used the time to go over my notes. Not much for keeping notes, I decided to do it for this case because Ardal and I were working with strangers. They were bound to be critical of us and our methods.

Pete was sitting close to me with his head on my knee. He had argued that it would make sense for him to hear what McCarthy had to say about the case. Pete was afraid if he got the second hand version from me, I might leave something out and he needed every detail to figure out who the killer was. I admitted to myself that Pete was excellent at seeing things from the killer’s point of view.

McCarthy wandered in at ten after nine and I smiled at the big blue bruise highlighting his freshly shaved face. Now that he had cleaned up a little—for whatever reason—he wasn’t a bad looking guy.

He sat down at the table leaving an empty chair between the two of us and placed his coffee container in front of him. I thought I caught a whiff of cologne, but I couldn’t be sure.

He didn’t bring us any coffee, but then I didn’t expect him to. I’d already pegged McCarthy as a prick. Prove me wrong.

“Where do you want to start?” I tried using my friendly voice.

“Let’s start with you telling me why Packard wants you here. That’s what’s pissing me off the most.”

“I figured something was up your ass,” I snarked back and him and made Ardal smile.

“Didn’t Sheriff Packard explain that already? Ardal and I are working on the first killing—ours—the one that belongs to Shadow County—and your sheriff feels this second one is connected. I agree. Two in a row and there could be others in the past we don’t know about. We’re looking for a serial killer.”

“Ain’t none of them around these parts,” growled Kevin and Pete growled back at him.

“Gloria Daniels and Carter Timson would argue that point with you, Kevin. They’re both dead and the same person or persons killed them.”

Grumpy Kevin raised an eyebrow. “Don’t tell me you think there’s more than one killer.”

“No, I don’t, but I’m not closing my mind to possibilities until we have more evidence.”

Kevin took a sip of his coffee. “You’d better catch me up on your case and get me up to speed. I don’t know dick about you or the first murder.”

“There’s nothing you need to know about me personally,” I said. “I’m a cop like you and that’s all you need to concern yourself with.”

“You’re the weirdest and youngest cops I’ve ever seen.”

Pete snarled under the table.

“Why’d you bring your goddammed dog in here?”

“He’s a police dog. Where’s he supposed to be? At doggie daycare?”

“Okay, cut the shit, girly, and tell me about the first case.
