Chapter 11

“What are you doing?”

I backed out of the closet on my hands and knees, where I was busy digging out the Amazon packages full of clothes I’d never bothered to look at. They were Mom’s way of making herself feel better for never being home and missing my games. I hadn’t opened any of them because I didn’t want to assuage her guilt. I’d rather have a mom in the stands than a new shirt any day.

But when the going got tough, I crumbled and went looking for something to wear to the party. I shoved my hair out of my face as I glanced up at Bailey. “I’m selling my soul for a cute outfit.”

“Sweet.” She didn’t miss a beat. Didn’t question my odd comment. “Let me help.”

Was it any wonder she was one of my bestest friends?

She sat cross-legged on the worn gray carpet and reached for a box. Giving it a shake, she said, “I’m guessing … maxi dress.” She tore into it. Sure enough, it was a red maxi dress with a twist over the bodice and a knot in the bottom of the skirt.

I cocked my head. “Cute.”

“You should wear this to school sometime.”

I lowered my brow. I wasn’t really a dress-to-school type. I always made my hair look great and wore makeup. It wasn’t like I was a total tomboy or anything. But I could stand to be more girly. “Wearing a dress now and then won’t kill me.”

She threw it at me. “A few people might die of shock, though.”

I laughed. “True that.” Rubbing my palms together, I selected the largest package. Inside was a pair of skinny jeans and a flowing Bohme top with rickrack around the neckline. In a smaller bag was a pair of earrings and a necklace that matched perfectly. I grinned at Bailey. “I think I just found my outfit for the party.”

“Try it on. Try it on. Try it on!”

I giggled as I slipped into the perfect pair of jeans. Even I knew they were hugging the right places. The top slid over my head and landed perfectly just above my hips.

“Wow. Just wow!” Bailey covered her mouth.

I spun around and found my image in the mirror on the back of the door. I looked … good. Like date-night-come-and-kiss-me good.

Was I a horrible person because I wanted Gabe to see me in this outfit, wanted him to drool a puddle on the floor when I walked into the party? I mean, last night, I was all set to be friends and everything, and then one great piece of clothing and matching earrings and I was ready to charge right through those barriers.

Bailey got to her feet and came to stand behind me. She lifted my hair off my neck and piled it on top of my head. “You look so different.” She let go and pulled back a couple sections, leaving the rest down. “We need to do something out of the ordinary.”

“Agreed. No braids and no ponytails.
