Darcy returned to London without Georgiana. He wrote to Bingley to let him know he was back in town and Bingley invited him to Mr. Hurst’s house. They planned to meet the next afternoon, but Darcy was in the area earlier in the day and stopped by.

The butler explained that Mr. Bingley was out, but he was expected to return shortly. “May I wait for him?” Darcy asked.

“Yes, sir,” the butler said and lead him down the hall to a small office.

As Darcy waited, he removed his gloves and glanced through a novel left on a desk, then as time passed, he closed his eyes and dozed.
