Chapter Seven

Christiana was beside herself with worry. It had been three days since she’d been dragged from home by two thugs. Three days since she’d lost consciousness and had awoken here in this horrible tower. Three days since she’d been held prisoner, chained to the circular wall by one wrist with enchanted chains that wouldn’t break and a manacle that wouldn’t unlock no matter what she’d tried.

And four, long and lonely days since she’d seen Henry.

“Moping is not becoming, Cinderella,” her stepmother reminded her as she threw on a black cloak and fastened the frogged clasps. The woman had remained in the tower with her since the morning, doing nothing but prattling on about how she’d spent the last few days or describing the gowns they’d chosen for the wedding. When her conversation had been spent, she had sat in quiet, occupying the only winged-back chair in the room, alternately reading and casting smug glances at Christiana.

It had been an effective and acute form of torture.

“What would you have me do while I’m a prisoner?” Aggravation tightened her chest and, in vain, she tugged at the manacle on her left wrist. With the chain’s length, she could access all points of the ten-foot circular room, but she couldn’t climb out the window. “I certainly refuse to find joy in the situation.”

Worry sat heavy in the pit of her belly like a rock. What had become of Henry, of her father? And why had her stepmother locked her in this dratted tower, caring enough to keep her alive when she could have easily left her for dead?

Sybil patted a few escaped tendrils of red hair into place. “That is your choice, of course, but you might attempt to make the best of it. This is your new home until my plans come to fruition.” She drew on a pair of black leather gloves. The light from the setting sun cast frightening and lengthening shadows upon the curved wall.

“What of Father? He was due to return home yesterday.” How would she escape from this place? She had no weapons, not even a pair of scissors. And she certainly didn’t know the spell to unlock the manacle.

“Another worry that will add wrinkles to your face, Cinderella, and then I won’t be able to sell you to a top bidder.” Her pout was purely make believe, for the woman cared nothing for her. “Men in other kingdoms will pay handsomely for a pretty bride... or plaything.”

Christiana fought off the urge to retch as sour bile hit the back of her throat. “What happened to my father?” Not that she expected the truth from her stepmother.

“Oh, I’m afraid my husband never made it home.” She landed her steely-eyed gaze on Christiana and batted her lashes. “No doubt something horrible has occurred to prevent his journey.”

“What did you do?” Anger and fear warred inside her chest. She clenched her hands into fists. The chain rattled, reminding her of her fate.

“Who can say?” Sybil shrugged. “More’s the
