Lewisâ face said he wanted to know if what she said was true, but now was not the time or place to answer him. Having promised to escort Felipeâs sister to safety, she had to follow through. Meanwhile, another group checked out the address heâd given. She suspected itâd be empty. John Calhoun wouldnât risk getting caught so easily. But despite that, theyâd gained a lead that might pan into something much bigger.
âThis the place?â Lewis asked.
Serena eyed the rundown trailer park, her gaze stopping on the battered one in question. Two children played on the steps, from the looks of it, ages two and four. Dirty faces and dirtier clothing attested to their poverty. No child should have to do without.
âSeems to be,â she replied. She unbuckled and exited the borrowed SUV, her new heels spiking into the soil. One hand on the rickety chain link gate, she paused.
A womanâs face appeared in the open doorway, her expression hidden by the screen.
âHola,â Serena called. âFelipe sent us.â
The woman cracked the door, snatching the younger of the two kids from the steps and taking the other by the hand.
âSerena Hernandez, and this is Lewis Dauger. Weâre here to take you somewhere safe.â
She didnât believe them, that was plain, the whites of her eyes bright in the midst of her face.
âFelipeâs in a world of trouble,â Serena continued. âHeâs not going to be able to protect you anytime soon. Please believe me. We only want to help.â
The woman hesitated a second longer, then reversed. âCome inside.â
Serena waited for Lewis to open the gate, walking ahead of him down the overgrown path and steadying herself on the rickety steps, one hand on the trailerâs metal siding.
The poverty outdoors was worse inside. The childrenâs toys, what few they had, were dirt-smudged and broken, the furniture leftover from some thrift shop, the kitchen spare and empty. Without pause, Serena seated herself on the couch across from the woman, whoâd drawn the children into her lap.
âFelipeâs in trouble?â she asked softly.
Serena nodded once. âHe has to serve his time, but heâs worried about you. A man whoâs after him has made threats.â
The woman stiffened.
âWe have a place you can go, people whoâll watch over you until heâs caught.â
âTheyâll deport us.â
Serena exhaled. A natural fear, but one sheâd work her hardest to prevent. âJuana, right?â
The woman nodded.
âI will make sure someone looks into you staying here. I know you didnât ask for any of this. But think of your children ... you want them to be safe, right?â
Juana nodded.
âThen come with us. Youâll have a bed to sleep in and food, medical care.â
âI ... have to take a few things,â Juana replied.
Serena inclined her head. âOf course.â She stood to her feet and extended her arms. âHere, weâll watch the little ones while you pack.â
The little girlâs warm body on her hip and the boyâs tiny fingers in her right hand, Serena watched Juana disappear in the back of the trailer. She looked down at the childrenâsâ faces.
