Conclusions

As dispensationalist views of history gain hold more broadly throughout the Christian world, and as circles of real political and military power hold these views, one may reasonably wonder if the just war view dominant in previous Christian thinking about war will not be supplanted by apocalyptic visions. This admittedly alarming prospect can hardly be ruled out. Further, if dispensationalist views predominate in a group or culture possessing WMD, it is difficult to predict whether and how long the group will remain content with the mere possession, awaiting God's inevitable timetable, or if it will use such weapons as agents of God's plan.

Clearly, however, understanding the internal logic, pervasiveness, and growth of this particular interpretation of Christianity is just as important in our post-September 11 world as is grasping al Qaeda's or other Islamic radical groups' search for means to inflict mass casualties. The same recipe and ingredients for religiously inspired acts of violence and use of WMD exist in American political culture and, through the effective and aggressive missionary efforts of American evangelicals, increasingly in world Christian culture as well.
