Chapter 15

The Rider

Rhen and Vex stepped off the dirt road into the open grassy plains. A soft breeze carried the scent of sweet flowers through the air. Vex halted and took in a deep breath, savoring the freshness of the open air. His usual stoic expression broke into a rare smile, and his dark brown eyes shimmered in the sunlight.

What has gotten into him? I have never seen him this way before, Rhen thought as she stared at her trainer. Vex raised his left hand to his lips and emitted a high-pitched whistle, then smoothly transitioned to a lower tone. Next, he cupped both hands beside his mouth and shouted, “Maverick!”

He produced an apple from his side pouch and stood there, the rolling fields before him. Rhen glanced ahead and spotted a large black head popping up over a nearby hill. Her heart raced. Is that a horse? The excitement in Vex’s demeanor was infectious, and Rhen’s lips curved into a matching smile.

The black horse bounded towards them, its mane and tail flowing like ink across a canvas. As it slowed and drew near Vex, it lowered its head in acknowledgment. Vex mirrored the gesture, closing his eyes and connecting with the majestic creature. “It’s been a while. Sorry for the wait,” Vex whispered, his hand extended with the offering of an apple. The horse nickered, accepting the treat and munching on it, its lips dripping with blue juice.

Vex’s laughter filled the air as he patted the horse’s side. The equine was a majestic specimen, tall and muscular, dwarfing even Vex in size. Its mane and tail cascaded like a waterfall of midnight silk. “He’s beautiful,” Rhen couldn’t help but comment as she drew closer to the animal. Her hand tentatively reached out as the horse turned its large eye toward her.

Vex’s gloved hand reached out and grabbed her wrist. ”Unfortunately, he doesn’t like strangers touching him. Unless you want to get bit, I would back up a few steps if I were you.“ He gave the horse an affectionate pat, the bond between them evident.

Vex reached to his side and produced a second apple. With a slight toss, he sent it towards Rhen. Rhen caught the apple and looked at it as it rested in her hand, puzzlement wrinkling her brow. “So, when should I give him the apple?”

Vex’s smile grew mischievous, “You won’t.” The playful glint in his eyes made her want to chuckle. The contrast with his usual seriousness was refreshing.

“Then why give me the fruit in the first place?” Rhen quirked an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at her lips.

“Because that one is for your horse,” Vex answered, the grin never leaving his face. Rhen couldn’t help but laugh, the infectious joy in his expression making it hard to resist. “Call out for Ander. He is a Chosen horse bound to you. I had a close friend who bound him when he visited the city a few nights ago.”

Rhen raised her hands to the sides of her mouth and shouted as loud as she could.
