Erni didn’t return to the lounge after that night. Her boss called her several times over the week but she said that she was too ill to work. About three days after the incident, a man came to her kos and delivered a sealed brown envelope. It was from Djoko. There was 5 million rupiah in it. There was no note from him. She used the money to leave Jakarta. She went back to her village but not much had changed there. Her family was happy to see her but her father was still as cold and distant as ever, his religious pronouncements were now more severe with the passing years. She stayed there for two weeks and then she made a decision to return to Bali. It had been three years since she had left the island.

She found her way back to Sanur. Her decision to become a prostitute was based purely on monetary considerations. She tried working at an Italian trattoria for about a month but the wage was too low and the tips were not enough for her to support her family back in Java. Djoko had taken away the last vestiges of her self-respect. By keeping his money she felt that she was no better than a prostitute.
