I sat in Peter’s car waiting for him. When he got in, he stared over at me.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Astrid F. BSN,” I said, as if that would explain everything.

“OK,” he said, like he understood.

Peter started the car and put his seat belt on. He put the car in gear and, as he pulled out from the curb, he said,

“Where to now?”

“Hospital. I need to see my nurse.”

I could see him shake his head, but he didn’t say anything. I figured now was a good time to break the news.

“Me and Sarah. We’re sleeping together.”

He glanced over at me.

“Not the best way to avoid conflict, sleeping with a client. Even one that isn’t paying. I wonder what the state would say if they knew?”

“We know what they would say, and I don’t care. She and I are alike in so many ways.”

“I can think of one.”

I looked over at him. He was staring out the windshield, the picture of innocence.

“Not the drinking. Beyond that. It’s more than that.”

He said nothing more, and we soon pulled into the hospital parking lot. As he looked for a place to park, I said,

“Just drop me off. I'll catch a ride back.”

“You don’t want me going with you?”

I opened the door and got out, letting the door close as I walked toward the doubled door entrance.

I asked the desk receptionist for Astrid Franklin. She directed me toward the E.R. doors.

Stepping through the doors, I stepped into a world of sanitized cleanliness and the strong smell of antiseptic.

She was sitting behind the nurse’s counter, working on the computer. She looked up as I stepped up to the counter.

“Can I help you, sir?”

She looked up, and she didn’t recognize me.

“I need to talk to you, Astrid. If you have a moment.”

“I don’t. Do you need to see a doctor?” she said, looking at my face.

“Saw him already, along with you. I want to talk about your sister.”

She rolled her chair back a bit, looking at me, curious.

“What about my sister?”

I pointed to my face and said,

“I think this is connected to her. Please, it won’t take long.”

She looked around the room. No one was watching us. She stood, came around the counter, and motioned for me to follow her.
