Chapter 5

It was the first time I felt no anxiety in the chopper. I was starting to savor it, the opportunities afforded to me by the simple fact that my sperm was still operable. There was a lot on my mind, as far as being one of the few men in America with the potential to populate the future, and Siri being pregnant with my first child, but I was able to push it out and simply breathe in the moment.

No matter how much Nikita wanted to downplay it, I was still going to fucking Hawaii. Where I’m from, that’s sort of a dream vacation destination, sort of my personal equivalent to Disneyland.

I hadn’t even thought about it until we were in the air, but I wondered how Nikita felt about ushering me to another woman’s place for breeding. We certainly weren’t dating, or anything of the sort, but I had an inkling feeling that she wasn’t quite as bulletproof as she portrayed. She was a person, and she’d finally let her guard down just enough that some of it seeped out.

“Look this over.” she said, dropping the folder in my lap. Instead of her usual briefing, there was silence while she stared out the window. It dawned on me that I knew very little about her, that I’d spent so much time tossing shallow innuendos in her direction that I’d neglected getting to know her.

I opened the folder, and felt the warmth of instant attraction and comfort wash over me when I saw her face.

“Ava.” I said, reading her name to myself and soaking in her beautiful smile. She was radiant, and I had an immediate physical reaction to her smiling portrait. Her name was Ava Thomson, 21 years old and born in Honolulu.

There was pertinent information like the name of her high school and graduating class, parent’s names and occupations, as well as some insider information like the fact that she’d recently broken up with her high school sweetheart, and had written a series of comic books that appeared to be geared towards children, with the main character being a slightly overweight cat.

“Do you have any information on this one?” I asked, after flipping on my microphone.

“She’s already ovulating, that’s why this is a rush job. We’re going in for a quickie or two, depending on what you’re up for, and then we’re going to fly from Oahu to Maui.”

“Word? Who’s the other girl?”

“I want you to focus on Ava for now, I’ll give you the other file on the way over. It’s a 30 minute flight.” she said.

“Okay, sweet.”

“Oh yeah, Kelsi is also pregnant. She and her husband are over the moon about it, they sent you a thank you card. It should be back at the barracks in a couple of days.” she said. I was so busy thinking about Siri that I hadn’t even thought about Kelsi. The life of a Bull was a bit disorienting, and it was taking me some time to catch up with its realities.
