Chapter Sixteen

Agatha Harrigan had just spoken to her daughter through a mirror. She did not understand how such a thing was possible, but that was not the focus of her thoughts. Isabelle had assured her that she was happy and well, but Agatha didn’t believe her words.

Though she had not seemed harmed, Agatha was certain her daughter needed her. Thus she was determined to find Isabelle. She and William had been searching for days to no avail. It was as though Isabelle had vanished into thin air. But now that Agatha had spoken to her daughter, she needed to inform William at once.

She was on her way to his house when something caught her attention. It was an animal rustling in the trees near the bridge leading to the Terrys’ farm.

As she approached, she realized the animal—a fox—was injured. It lay there with its eyes shut, whimpering. Agatha lowered herself to the ground. “I’m sorry I cannot help you,” she said.

Black smoke emerged from the animal, circling Agatha. Her head whipped from right to left as her eyes followed the smoke. Then, a form appeared. It was an old woman with a pointy chin and many warts over her face. With wide eyes, Agatha looked around, searching for the fox. It had vanished. Had this woman come from the fox?

“You couldn’t help me,” the woman said. “But I can help you.” She tilted her head from right to left. “No, perhaps you can help me. If you heed my words.”

Agatha backed away. “Who are you?”

The woman bowed her head. “A Seer, here to help you.”

“What can you possibly do for me?”

The Seer’s eyes filled with glee. “Why, help you find your sweet daughter, of course. Isabelle I believe is her name?”

Hope filled Agatha. “Can you really help me find my daughter?”

“Of course, of course.”

Agatha squinted at her. “Why were you a fox?”

The Seer sighed. “It was an error. The fox and I had an understanding, that I would enter his body and learn what it was like to be a…it’s not important. You’re only interested in finding your daughter, correct?”

Agatha nodded vehemently. “Where is she?”

The Seer waved her wrinkly hand. “In a castle far, far away.” Her eyes widened. “Prisoner to a ruthless beast who does not treat her well.”

Agatha’s heart dropped. She internally cried for her daughter. “Where is this castle? Please, Seer, I must free her at once.”

The old woman tilted her head again. “And how do you intend to free the girl from this animal?” She studied the younger woman from top to bottom. “You appear as though you’ve never fought a day in your life.”

Agatha swallowed. “I suppose I hadn’t considered that.”

The Seer waved her fingers and a sword appeared in her hand. “You can only kill the animal with this weapon. Strike him in the heart and he will perish. Strike him in the heart and your daughter will be free.”

Agatha took the sword from her, scanning its length. “Are you certain?”

The woman nodded. She snapped her fingers and a horse appeared.
