No classical scholar would listen to an argument that the authenticity of Herodotus or Thucydides is in doubt because the earliest manuscripts of their works which are of use to us are over 1,300 years later than the originals.36

“What about more familiar classical works—like Aristotle?” asked Andrea.

“Good question. Aristotle wrote his Poetics around 343 BC, yet the earliest copy we have is dated AD 1100—a gap of nearly fourteen hundred years—and only forty-nine copies, or manuscripts, exist. Caesar composed his history of the Gallic Wars between 58 and 50 BC, and its manuscript authority rests on only nine or ten copies dating back to a thousand years after his death.”37

“Whoa … how do you know all this?” asked Nick.

“I’ve researched it extensively. For one whole semester during seminary I taught at a private Catholic high school. I had to deliver the same lecture for three sections and I still have most of it memorized.” Jamal stood up and grabbed another book off the shelf. “Let me read to you from Dr. Bruce Metzger, who was the author or editor of fifty books on the manuscript authority of the New Testament as well as other first-century classics. Many consider him to have been the foremost manuscript authority in the world. Incidentally, he was also Dr. Peterson’s mentor at Princeton. Let me read what Dr. Metzger concluded.”
