Meredith let him have everything he wanted, because this was the last time they’d ever have sex. She opened herself up, let him do things she normally shied from, and moved with abandon, as if she were not running the caller’s words over and over again in her head.

“Well, hello there,” said a woman’s voice. Very Texan. “I guess you’re Meredith, yes?”

“Yes.”

“So glad to finally speak with you,” Fanny Mackey said in a rush. “I just wanted to tell Louis that we bought his plane ticket to Dallas, and it’s the noon flight like we discussed. I’m so sorry you won’t be coming along, but we’ll meet someday, I’m sure.”

“Okay,” said Meredith, suddenly very aware of her nakedness.

“Dear, I’ve gotta run. Travis is getting impatient to eat. Men. Love to you, dear.”

Then Fanny hung up. Meredith sat on the bed and began to cry.

Afterward, Louis rolled onto his back, covered in sweat. “God. Wow.”

She kissed him and got up to dress. “You hungry?”

“Yeah, but I’ve got to get to work.”

“I’ll pick up something.”

“Pasta?”

“I’ll see what I can find.”

Before she left, she slung her purse over her shoulder and looked back at him sitting naked at the desk with the laptop open in front of him. She had to admit, he looked very handsome.

She wondered what, exactly, she was going to do. Before yesterday, she’d never expected this sort of thing from him. From other men, yes, but not Louis. Louis had been like the bronze Charlie Chaplin she found in a green square facing the lake. Something pure and solid. Now, he was someone entirely different, like those drooling cowboys back at the Bunny Ranch, who wanted nothing more than to spend a few minutes with her in bed before hightailing it out of town.

There was only one thing to do, but it took her awhile to face up to it. She continued past Chaplin to the chocolate lake and stared at the twinkling lights of other towns along the shore. There, among promenading couples, she was finally able to face what had to be done.
