ROI Analyses of WHP Programs

Peer-reviewed evaluations and meta-analyses show that ROI is achieved through improved worker health, reduced benefit expense, and enhanced productivity.43 A review of seventy-two articles concluded that health promotion programs achieve an average ROI of $3.48 per $1 invested when considering healthcare costs alone, $5.82 when considering absenteeism, and $4.30 when both healthcare costs and absenteeism are considered.44 A one-year study using a pretest and posttest design tracked changes in ten modifiable health risks for 2,458 workers at 121 Colorado businesses that participated in a comprehensive WHP program. Reductions were recorded in ten risk factors examined (reduction for each risk factor presented in parentheses):

Poor physical activity (−6.5%),

Poor eating habits (−5.8%) ,

High stress (−3.5%),

Depression (−2.3%),

Obesity (−2.0%),

High alcohol consumption (−1.7%),

Tobacco use (−1.3%),

High total cholesterol (−0.9%),

High blood pressure (−0.3%), and

High blood glucose (−0.2%).
