■ The Research Idea

The first step in conducting a literature review is brainstorming about an idea or an area of interest with colleagues and mentors. The nurse’s practice area is probably one of the most common sources for a research idea in the nursing field. Important issues in nursing provide abundant ideas for research. For example, the nursing shortage, the cost of health care, the quality of care for uninsured persons, and new delivery methods identified in federal legislative bills are all broad areas that may generate a researchable topic. Ideas may also come from reading professional journals or from the news media. As we realize that the majority of research at this time tends to be done within teams of peers who have a common interest, ideas to help provide the foundation for the brainstorming sessions can be determined. During a brainstorming session, every idea should be put on the table for consideration. Once a thorough list of ideas is developed, further development of the selected thinking can be done by the group to clarify and cultivate the research and/or EBP idea.

In addition, articles in professional journals may end with the phrase, “additional research is needed to explore the nature of …” Here is a snapshot of one such article: “Although we did not identify differences in opinions of women with and without IPV [intimate partner violence] history, a more detailed approach to data collection may evoke differences we did not detect” (Iverson et al., 2014, p. 309). In this qualitative example, areas within the current study that would benefit from further investigation are presented to stimulate additional studies. Often, the conclusion of an article marks the starting point for other research ideas.
