Chapter 33 - Nick

“We’re almost finished,” Henry said.

Nick was breathing hard, his entire body ached, and he couldn’t remember the last time he was this tired. “Almost?”

Henry grinned. “I’ll tell you when we’re done.”

“I hate you so much.”

Henry laughed and stepped forward, striking high. Nick fell for the feint and ended up getting his legs swept from under him.

It wasn’t the first time he hit the ground, and he shoved himself up with a growl, determined not to let it happen again.

He felt dirt falling from his shirt and he lunged forward, trying to catch Henry by surprise.

Henry saw it coming and stepped out of the way, moving to the side and then somehow getting behind him. He tapped his weapon lightly against Nick’s back.

Nick whirled around and tried a kick, and Henry wrapped an arm around his leg and stepped forward, throwing Nick off balance.

Henry tapped his club against Nick’s chest.

Nick hopped on his other leg to regain his balance and swung his weapon, and Henry pulled him forward, forcing Nick’s other leg into an awkward angle. His swing missed wildly, and Henry tapped the club against his side.

Nick shoved Henry’s chest, and Henry released him as he stepped back.

“Good. Don’t fixate on your weapon.”

Nick gritted his teeth. Henry wasn’t even out of breath.

He rushed through a series of attacks, swinging again and again, but Henry avoided every single one of them. Within minutes, Nick had exhausted himself, and Henry simply pushed Nick’s arm aside and stepped in, tapping his club against Nick’s chest.

“I thought you were retired,” Nick panted.

“I am.”

“Why aren’t you out of practice?”

Henry smiled. “I am.”

“This is you being out of practice?”

Henry laughed, and he moved in to begin again.

Nick needed a break to catch his breath, so he raised a hand. “Wait, wait. Why did you retire?”

Henry shrugged. “Things change when you have a family.”

“You stopped because of us?”

“You and Brett needed me. I made the choice to put it all behind me.”

Nick stepped back, shifting his grip on the weapon. “Do you ever regret it?”

“Never.”

Nick lunged with his club and Henry kicked it out of his hand and stepped in, grabbing Nick and turning him. Nick stumbled and tripped over Henry’s leg and fell onto his back.

Henry tapped his club against Nick’s chest.

“Good attempt,” Henry said.

Nick groaned.

“You’ll get there,” Henry said, and he laughed when Nick shot him a dark look. “Come on.” He held out his hand to help Nick up. “One more time, and then we’re done.”
