[SHOCK & AWE] Sound Affects

In his book Noise [1977], Jacques Attali wrote: “The representation of music is a total spectacle.” Speaking about the orchestra as an organized body of working parts, Attali establishes the metaphor for a united front that generates music as an expression of power to overwhelm the listener. On The Downward Spiral, Reznor made sound into a spectacle, casting the listener as witness to dynamic expressions of volume and intensity. The graphic nature of his lyrics describe extreme emotional high and low states, exposing himself through his narrator toward intimate confessions.

But the power of The Downward Spiral is not simply about noise and volume, not just an exchange between verses and choruses—Reznor exploits versatile and shifting song dynamics that generate drama, more like the classical music Attali describes. Reznor achieves this through the repulsion-and-attraction reflex of the sublime, applying shock and awe to [figuratively] blow the listener away and using power, ambience, and silence to control narrative tension offering reprieves that allow the listener reflective space.
